Glossary of terms

  • Advertiser (also called Merchant or Retailer): A website that sells a product or service, accepts payments, and fulfills orders. Advertisers place ads and links to their products and services on other websites (affiliates) through MMO Network and pay those affiliates a commission for the resulting leads or sales.

  • Affiliate (also called a Publisher, Associate or Partner): An independent    party, or website, that promotes the products or services of a merchant in exchange for a commission.

  • Affiliate Marketing Program (also called Pay for Performance Marketing, Partner Marketing or CPA): A type of revenue sharing program where an affiliate receives a commission for generating a lead or sale for a merchant online.

  • Click-through (also called click): The action a visitor makes when they are referred from one website through to another, via an advertisement or link.

  • Commission: The payment made to an affiliate for generating a sale or lead for a merchant via the affiliate's website.

  • Cookie: A small file stored on a visitor's computer that records information relevant to the merchant's site.

  • Cost per Lead: The commission structure where the merchant pays the affiliate an agreed fee for each qualified lead (potential customer) referred to the merchant's website.

  • Cost per Sale: The commission structure where the merchant pays an affiliate a percentage or flat fee for a sale of a product or service to a customer referred to the merchant's site.

  • CPA (Cost per Acquisition): An agreed payment rate for a specific action taken by a visitor to a merchant's site, such as an application or purchase.

  • CPC (Cost per Click): System where an advertiser pays an agreed amount to a website publisher for each click someone makes on a link leading to their web site.

  • CPM: Cost per thousand impressions.

  • Lead: When a visitor registers, signs up for something, fills out a form, or downloads something at a merchant's site.

  • Link: A form of advertising on a website, email or online newsletter, which, when clicked on, refers the visitor to a merchant's website.

  • Merchant (also called Advertiser, Retailer, E-retailer, or Online Retailer): A website that sells a product or service, accepts payments, and fulfills orders. Merchants place ads and links to their products and services on other websites (affiliates) through OMG Network and pay those affiliates a commission for the resulting leads or sales.

  • Natural Search (organic search, organic listings etc): The non-paid search results lists seen in search engines. As opposed to paid or sponsored listings.

  • PPC (Pay per Click, also known as Paid Search): Advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website. Ads are served according to keywords or searches conducted by a search engine user.

  • Paid Search (PPC or Pay per Click): Advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website. Ads are served according to keywords or searches conducted by a search engine user

  • Publisher (also called a Affiliate, Associate, Partner or Content Site): An independent party, or website, that promotes the products or services of a merchant in exchange for a commission.

  • Sale: When a visitor makes a purchase from a merchant's website.

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation): The term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken.

  • Search Marketing (Also known as Search Engine Marketing or SEM): The process and strategy of using search engines results as an advertising vehicle. This may include improving rankings in organic listings, buying and managing paid listings, or a combination of methods all designed to increase visibility, clicks, leads and sales.

  • Web-based: Requiring no software to access an online service or function, other than a web browser and access to the internet.
